Nowadays, the world economy is dominated by large and powerful transnational corporations (TNCs). Chinese TNCs haven't developed until recent years and actually, China does not have its own world-class TNCs yet. In order to have the comparative edge in the world economic competition, China must have its own TNCs that can compete with the top TNCs of other countries in the world market. However, the great importance of having our own large and powerful TNCs has not been recognized universally and there are no complete and appropriate strategies and measures to promote the development of Chinese TNCs In this thesis, I try to analyze the main problems that exist in the transnational operation of Chinese enterprises, elaborate on the great importance of fostering our own TNCs and put forward strategies and measures suitable for China. This thesis consists of four chapters. In the first chapter, I define TNCs and transnational operation (TNO), explain the relation between them and point out that Chinese enterprises must develop TNO actively to grow into large and powerful TNCs to compete with the top TNCs of other countries in the world market; then I retrospect on the history of TNCs of the world and forecast their development trend in the future so that provide some reference for the development of Chinese TNCs; at last I introduce the theories on TNCs, especially the theories on the TNCs of developing countries and conclude that as a developing country, China should and can have its own TNCs.In the second chapter, I discuss the great importance of TNCs to the economy of the world, the host countries and the home countries. The discussion will show that nowadays large and powerful TNCs dominate the world economy and they account for a great share in the GDP of their home countries and host countries. In the third chapter, I analyze the development of Chinese TNCs, including their history, current condition, achievements and problems. Then I point out that Chinese TNCs have gained a lot of achievements after some period of development, but at the same time, there are still many problems to be solved in the TNO of Chinese TNCs, and Chinese TNCs cannot grow into large and powerful TNCs if these problems are not solved. Then I expound on the necessity and great importance of fostering our own TNCs, say that in order to improve China's economic strength and cope with the increasingly fierce world economic competition, China must foster its own TNCs.In the fourth chapter, I analyze how to foster our own TNCs. I focus the analysis on the development pattern, foreign direct investment (FDI) strategies, and internal management of Chinese TNCs. and then I propose strategies and measures suitable to the development of Chinese TNCs. Firstly, I discuss the development pattern of Chinese TNCs. As we know, the top TNCs have a history of decades long or even more than one hundred years, while Chinese TNCs have not been developing for a long time. If we copy the early development pattern of the western top TNCs mechanically, it will be hard or even impossible for Chinese TNCs to overtake thewestern top TNCs. Therefore, Chinese TNCs should choose a development pattern suitable for them. Considering the fact that the world economic situation has greatly changed and Chinese TNCs have gained great achievements in their TNO, those enterprises with a solid foundation may stride over one or two steps of TNO to accelerate their development as TNCs. Secondly, I discuss the FDI strategies of Chinese enterprises. I focus the discussion on the purpose, host countries, industries and market entry manners of FDI. Thirdly, I analyze the main problems that exist in the internal management of Chinese TNCs and point out that now it is imperative for Chinese TNCs to set up and improve corporation governance, financial administration and internal supervision. Lastly, taking the world economic situation and the main problems existing in the TNO of Chinese TNCs into account, I propose strategies and measures suitable for China.
