Professor C. K. Prahalad and Gary Hamel pointed out in Harvard Business Review,1990 that "Core competencies are the collective learning in the organization, especially how to coordinate diverse production skills and integrate multiple streams of technologies." Core competencies can help the company to achieve the domination over the maket, thus, core competencies become the resources of the excess profits of a company. How to build up core competencies has turned into a big problem of the domestic bank system.China Merchants Bank(CMB) was founded in 1987,in the following 17years, CMB have made great achievement. Now, CMB's total assets ranks the 6th in the domestic bank system, while CMB only employ 0.4% employees, 0.2%branches and makes 1.6% assets and 6% profits of the whole domestic bank system. And this is called "CMB phenomenon". The author believe CMB's success derives from the success in building up of core competencies. So the author take CMB as the case and discuss the components of CMB's core competencies from the management angle. This paper is divided into 3 parts. The 1st part is the brief instruction of CMB and the definition of core competencies, the 2nd -6th chapter are the case analyses in which the author base his discussion on theories of tactic management, production innovation, marketing. At the last the author draw the conclusion and reveal the mystery of CMB's core competencies.Theory comes from practice, and practice contains theory. To study CMB from a management angle, to dig theory connotation from daily management practice are the innovation spot of this paper.By studying the "CMB phenomenon", I sincerely hope to find out the mystery of CMB's success and to reveal something useful to domestic commercial banks. In the end, the author draws the conclusion that CMB's success come from it's success in strategy management production innovation, marketing and humanism human resource management. And it is these factors that build up the core competencies of CMB, that create the "CMB phenomenon".
