Through reviewing on the theories of innovation from its birth, the article fosuses on the key roles of innovation in a company's life—it is the engine for a booming economy. Combining Clayton Christensen's theory of sustaining innovation and disruptive innovation (especially the latter one), the author points out why a big company with decent performance will always lose its position without any signs while a new entrant –small company with no experience and no enough resources can get a big part of the cake from the market.Some analysis has been given on the difference between sustaining innovation and disruptive innovation. High emphasis has been paid to the latter.And why a successsful big companies may face the dilemma of innovation, how can a company take the first move and become a disruptor but not being a later mover is stated in details. What the author has done independently is to summarize the newest theories on innovation today and give out the important points of view. Through analysing the real companies at home and aborad, the author gives out the significant infuluences of a disruptive innovation on a growing company and some reference to our China companies.The article mainly discusses three topics besides the reviewing of theories. One is about what blocks the pace of advancement of disruptive innovation. In this part, a real American company's innovation life is discussed on which kind of innovation can be a disruptive one. The second topic deals with the ways a company can take on the coming of disruptive innovation opportunities, and how to forge the company to be a strong competitor in a innovation situation. And in the discussion, two cases are given for a better understanding. In the last part of the paper, there are some suggestions on what Chinese companies can do better in the future fierce competition. And there is an outlook about where the innovation theory will lead to.
