This thesis touches upon the proliferation of nuclear weapons in the Middle East, dealing with some of political, military and psychological implications into the Middle East, an area of vital importance on the international scene. Probably there is no topic which needs more to be discussed than the issue of nuclear weapons. The nuclear policy pursed by any state in the region has far-reaching implication not only for the region but also for the rest of the world. This thesis examines the current state of nuclear programs in the region, the party's perceptions of the danger entailed in nuclear spread, the approach of Middle East states to nuclear arms control, the implications of various items on the regional and global nuclear nonproliferation agenda, and the role of the United States in the Middle East and its approach to the spread of nuclear weapons there.Chapter 1 outlines the nuclear programs pursed by Middle East states, evaluating the likelihood that each of these programs might lead to the acquisition of nuclear weapons, and also analyzes how the states view nuclear weapons and their likely impact in the Middle East. Chapter 2 mainly discusses the dynamics of the proliferation of nuclearweapons in the region. Chapter 3 examines the global nonproliferation agenda and its weakness. Chapter 4 elaborates the nuclear nonproliferation policy of the United States and its approach to the spread of nuclear weapons in the Middle East. Particular attention is given to U.S. policy regarding Israel's nuclear potential.
