The steady growth of China's economy and the increasing wealth of the people lay a concrete foundation for retail business of banks. In the last several years, many Chinese commercial banks have enhanced retail business, which serves customers while brings Chinese commercial banks new profit source. The transitional period after entry into the WTO has passed more than half. Many powerful and famous international banks have entered Chinese banking business and aimed at upper market of banking retail business, such as financing business and consumption loan business. The access of non-Chinese banks will make young banking retail business full of competition and challenge. Therefore, this article begins with analyzing the motives that Chinese commercial banks speed up banking retail business, and then analyzes the developing status of Chinese banking retail business, and concludes with putting forward my ideas about Chinese commercial banks on how to speed up banking retail business, and the external conditions. Retail business in this article means that customers are mainly individuals and families. This article discusses this subject from the following four aspects. The first chapter analyzes the motives, which urges Chinese commercial banks to develop retail business. After more than 20 years of economic reformation, Chinese economy has fundamentally changed. In 1997, buyer's market came into being and China went into surplus period. The fundamental change of macro-economic situation influenced commercial banks's business conditions development. Changes of business environment are the external motives, including the change of customer demand, the development of IT, and the loosening of financial regulations. Meanwhile, the pursuit of new profit source is internal motive. Traditional business of bank becomes less profitable because of developed capital market, competition and interest rate liberalization, while banking retail business is bringing more and more profits. Chinese commercial banks are gradually stepping into retail business period. The second chapter thoroughly analyzes the developing status of retail business of China's banks. In 2000, many Chinese commercial banks began to emphasize retail business. In 2003, retail business played an important role on financing business. In recent years, Chinese commercial bank steadily and positively develops retail business, but some problems exist. Chinese commercial banks in this article include four state-owned commercial banks, 10 comprehensive stock commercial banks and many city commercial banks. Firstly, the paper analyzes the saving products. Presently, Chinese commercial banks are trying to improve service quality, emphasize marketing, build multiplayer service channels, and perfect the saving accounts etc. But there are many problems, such as raising saving interest rate in disguise, too many operating outlets in a street, irrational pricing for saving product and so on. Secondly, the paper discusses the payment and settlement product for individual, which is represented by debit card product. Now banks begin to charge debit card product and enhance the service function of debit card. Besides, Banks create many new channels to supply payment and settlement service. But there are a few problems in this product field, such as lower pricing ability, lower creativity. Thirdly, the paper discusses the financing product, which is mostly competitive. To some degree, the financing products of commercial banks meet the investing demand, but they are much alike. Fourthly, the paper analyzes the consumption loan. In recent years, the consumption loans increased quickly. It includes house mortgage, car consumer loan, comprehensive consumption loan, education loan etc. butcommercial banks emphasize particularly on the house mortgage, car consumer loan and credit card. In a word, Chinese banks' retail business doesn't sufficiently meet the market demand and drops behind the commercial banks of western countries. Therefore, the paper brings out the ideas that...
