This thesis analyzes and studies the problem of Sichuan's foreigntrade competitiveness by adoption of foreign and local related theories offoreign trade competitiveness, sets up the evaluation system of Sichuan'sforeign trade competitiveness. Based on the study, the author poses futuresuggestions on promoting foreign trade competitiveness of Sichuan. Since having implemented the policy of reform and opening up,Sichuan has experienced a rapid growth in foreign trade. However, thereare still many problems, which would be resolved by the increase ofSichuan's foreign trade competition. Because a nation's foreign tradecompetitiveness directly embodied the nation's internationalcompetitiveness, it is the foundation of foreign trade development. Onlywhen a nation (region) has a lasting, strong foreign trade competitiveness, can the continuous, healthy, quick foreign trade increase be guaranteed. The strong (weak) competence of region's economy in a nation, alsoconsiderably depends on the foreign trade competitiveness of that region.Sichuan province has exerted important meaning to raise Sichuan'sforeign trade competitiveness, reasonably participate in internationallabor-division, and make full use of foreign and local resources andmarkets. Many studies have been conducted to address the issue, butthere are a few qualitative researches about Sichuan. Therefore, it hasimportant theoretical and practical meanings to make an empiricalresearch on Sichuan's foreign trade competitiveness. In theoretic analysis, the author reviews the related foreign tradecompetitiveness theories, and points out that the explanations on thesource of foreign trade competitiveness in traditional international tradetheory and national competitive advantage theory are unilateral. Theformer thinks that a nation's (region's) foreign trade lies on the nation's(region's) natural resource or government's action, the latter expands tounnatural resource, but impercipient about government's function. Thisthesis thinks Sichuan's foreign trade competitiveness is mainlydetermined by seven factors: factor endowments, demand conditions,related/supporting industries, firm strategy structure and rivalry, government, foreign capital and knowledge level. Then the author sets upthe evaluation system of Sichuan's foreign trade competitiveness. In empirical analysis, the paper studies Sichuan's foreign tradecompetitiveness, using Sichuan's export data, and then draws aconclusion. Conclusion one: On the whole competitiveness layer, Sichuan'sforeign trade ranks NO. 1 in west regions, and has implementedqualitative change of export structure. But Sichuan is still a small tradeprovince, for it's dependency of foreign trade(8.55%)and dependency ofexport (4.87%) have been keeping a low level; In 2003, the averageincrease of nation's foreign trade has been in lead over Sichuan; thewhole competitiveness of Sichuan's industry is very low. As a whole,Sichuan's foreign trade is very competitive among western regions, butweak in the national. Conclusion two: On the industry competitiveness layer, althoughSichuan has implemented the second change of export structure, theindustry intensive with capital and technique are not very competitive. Itsadvantage is still in the production process, and we cannot hold the coretechnique. Sichuan's labor-intensive industry is very competitive, but itscompetitive advantage presents to descend. Conclusion three: On the product competitiveness layer, Sichuan'sresource-intensive products, labor-intensive products, products intensivewith capital and technique all have strongly (weakly) competitiveproducts. This conclusion differs from the widely accepted viewpoint"Sichuan has priority in the exportation of product with intensive labors, not in those products with intensive capital and technique. However,Sichuan's product intensive with capital and technique, even theappliance product's core parts still need to be imported from the abroad orneeds foreign technique. In conclusion, since the early 1990s, Sichuan's fo...
