The study of contemporary Japan's diplomacy has been one focus of the international relation study in China for many years. A lot of scholars have been studying the issue from different perspectives and get an abundance of profound and perceptive research achievements. The thesis will try to study the transition and characteristics of contemporary Japan's diplomacy from the nationalism perspective based on the other scholars' work and their achievements.After the Cold War, international pattern changed basically. Japan became more and more active than ever before in the world through its powerful economy. And Japan's foreign policy also changed significantly and attractively. At the same time, neo-nationalism rose rapidly in Japan and became the more and more important factor influencing the political, economic and social situations in contemporary Japan. Obviously, neo-nationalism has an important influence on contemporary Japan's diplomacy inevitably. Then, how to analyze contemporary Japan's diplomacy from the nationalism perspective? It should be a project worm studying seriously and exploring thoroughly. Therefore, the subject of the thesis is the rise of Japanese neo-nationalism after the Cold War and its influence on contemporary Japan's diplomacy.The rise of Japanese neo-nationalism after the Cold War has complicated practical causes and profound relations to history. It is the result of the great change of the situations in and out of Japan, and the revival of some notions in Japanese people's minds. Neo-nationalism influences the diplomacy ideology of Japan, the policy makers and the content and target of its diplomacy, hence contemporary Japan's diplomacy. It makes contemporary Japan's diplomacy have a pair of contradictory characteristics, independent and dependent, rational and irrational.
