Pistols are a kind of weapon often used by police to combat crime and self-defend in a close distance, which is characterized by small size, light weight, portability and easy use. Shooting is a must among all the basic skills that the police should master. Shooting teaching and training in public security institutions are directly related to the capacity of future police's use of weapons as well as effectiveness of the police force for the protection of their own security and the people's life and property. At present, the public security institutes in China generally take shooting accuracy as the main content of shooting course. Subject to the traditional teaching methods, pistol shooting lessons in public security colleges are bound to the teachers' leading, taking the traditional sports as the main content of learning and assessment, so the teaching content is simple and out of date, hard to meet practical use. Students can only master basic skills of shooting and individual police action mode, lacking opportunities for flexible training of three-dimensional realistic combat and cooperative interaction of joint police with various arms. Their shooting ability and real-combat psychology lacking effective training, police officers can't guarantee accuracy and stability of shooting in real fight against criminals. When they meet unexpected situations, police officers do not know how to use pistols properly. Nowadays many domestic public security institutions are aware that the current teaching shooting isn't fit for current needs of police work. Based on research on related factors (students, teaching staff, teaching facilities, curricula, teaching methods, teaching evaluation) affecting shooting teaching in nine undergraduate public security institutes, the article analyzes and summarizes information obtained through access to information, expert interviews and survey. We have found that following limitations which exist in the shooting teaching in the current public security institutes: the lack of shooting teaching staff, excessive teaching burden, low-level academic degree of staff, lack of advanced teaching facilities, weak practicality for teaching content being focused on shooting accuracy, oversimplified teaching methods, lack of means to motivate students' interest to learn, simple means of teaching evaluation on students and non-scientific evaluation on teachers. The author expresses concern about above shortcomings and proposes countermeasures. The colleges should introduce more teaching staff, strengthen personnel training and exchange of in-service teachers, update teaching facilities and increase advanced equipment, invest more money, enhance teaching management, make teaching more practical and vary teaching evaluation.
