India is a founding member of the United Nations. Since independence, India's participation in the United Nations is being active and dynamic. India's foreign policy in the United Nations can be divided into three different stages, namely India's UN diplomacy in the early days of independence, the UN diplomacy from Sino-Indian border war to the end of the Cold War, and India's UN diplomacy in the post cold war era. In different historical stages, adapting with the then international environment and India's overall diplomacy, India's UN diplomacy performs characteristics of the times. Over half a century, India's foreign policy of the United Nations both experienced idealism to realism, and also went through from independent standing to quasi-alliance with Soviet Union then back to independent diplomacy. The willing to be a great power is always accompanied by the development of India's UN diplomacy. For India, the UN diplomacy is an important means to integrate into the international system.
