English reading has a very essential position in English learning and English teaching. As a way of language study, it is a main way of getting knowledge and communicating with others. Therefore, better comprehension on reading materials will directly serve for accepting the information.In terms of students in middle school, they are not only required to read quickly, but also to understand well. So it is important for them to acquire the ability. For the teachers, they need to innovate their teaching strategies because of the out-of-date traditional methods.However, it is admired that some researchers have already started to study teaching strategies on English reading. I'd like to work on the research, and hope to find a way to improve students'reading ability according to new English curriculum standard.The dissertation is consisted of five parts. The first part shows the background of the English reading research, the research literature both in domestic and abroad and the purpose and significance of study. The research methods are in the second part. The theoretical foundations are reviewed in the third part. The fourth part tells the result of the investigation of middle school students'reading, and the encompasses analysis of the present reading and teaching in middle schools and constructions of reading and teaching strategies.
