Reading is the basis of language acquisition, reading ability needs corresponding cognitive skills (central processing hypothesis), also is the influence of language characteristics (language dependent hypothesis),then, the relationship between the development of cognitive skills and reading ability, and the relationship between language characteristics and the development of reading ability would ever need to explore. At present, the main tend of psychology is the research of relationship between cognitive skills and reading ability development Including which cognitive skill is the core of reading ability development? and to some extent, there is predict function for reading, which cognitive skill only shows correlate relationship with the development of reading ability? Linguistics is concerned for the influence of language characteristics on reading ability, including voice form, vocabulary and grammar characteristics, word-building rules and the structure of language on the effect of reading [1]. From perspective of the relationship between cognitive skills and reading ability, reading acquisition process of second language is much more complicated, compare with the reading acquisition process of mother tongue.So, whether there are common cognitive factors when English is as first language and as second language acquisition.? Accord with central processing hypothesis. Or there are much cognitive differences? Accord with language dependent hypotheses. This study will continue to discuss the above problems with the subject of Chinese ESL children.Study one investigated the basic cognitive ability and the development of reading ability for Chinese ESL children in English immersion. Research found that phonological awareness is significant influenced factors for the immersed group of Chinese ESL children's second language acquisition, and English reading scores significantly higher than the not immersed group. It is proved that the second language development for the children of immersed grope is more fully than that of the children in traditional curriculum mode, therefore, this research choose immersed type children as the research object, inspects the influenced factors of second language reading ability,study two investigated the correlate relationship between basic cognitive ability and reading ability, correlation analysis study found:There are common basic cognitive skills when English as a second language reading acquisition and as a first language reading acquisition, including: phonological awareness, morpheme awareness, the constructive consciousness, visual processing, short-term memory. Examine the basic cognitive skills to the forecasting of English reading with Chinese ESL children, the study found that prediction function of morpheme awareness significantly higher than other basic cognitive skills. The core cognitive factors is significantly different when English is as first language and that of as second language, which did not follow the core cognitive factors that influenced the first language, has its own unique rule.Study three investigated the basic cognitive skills and reading ability for English dyslexia Chinese ESL children. Research found that English dyslexia Chinese ESL children will also meet the same difficulties which the first language in English children will meet. Chinese ESL English core dyslexia is phonological awareness with that of the first language English dyslexia children, There are common aspects between first language acquisition and second language acquisition.
