Marx attached great importance to the role of human in the development of society, researched human needs, cared about human’s living, liberation and development; he thought that human needs were the motive force of human activities and the basis of realizing human’s all-round development. Marx’s theory of needs internally contains the following aspects:there are different levels on human needs; development needs are the highest level of human needs; human needs have social historic. College students are country’s future, and they are the high-quality group with the most energy, now they are in the maturity period of physical development and psychological development, so they have extensive material needs and spiritual needs. The target of ideological and political education is college students, to do a good job of ideological and political education for college students has great significance. Marx’s theory of needs has important guiding significance on our country’s present ideological and political education in colleges and universities; in the vision field of Marx’s theory of needs, researching of colleges and universities ideological and political education and focusing on the needs characteristics and development status of college students are the necessary requirements to adapt to the social development in the new period. Marx’s theory of needs not only provides theoretical support for ideological and political education in colleges and universities, but also provides methodology guidance for ideological and political education in colleges and universities. Our country’s present ideological and political education work in colleges and universities is positive on the whole, but there are still some outstanding problems:the formulation of education goals is too abstract and lack hierarchy, focusing on social needs but ignore individuality; education content is out of date, rigid, lack of reality; education forms and methods are out of date, education environment is complex; the standards and contents of education evaluation is single, the evaluation method is mechanized, and evaluation subject is unified, above points are the key reasons that the effect of ideological and political education is weakening. To improve the effectiveness of ideological and political education, we have to pay attention to study the problems and challenges that ideological and political education in colleges and universities faces from the aspect of Marx’s theory of needs, in the process of ideological and political education practice, changing ideas from the optimization of education target, the enrichment of education content, the improvement of education process and the improvement of the education evaluation, so as to enhance the actual effect of ideological and political education in colleges and universities.
