Learning motivation is an important non-intellectual factor which influences learning.Stimulating and cultivating students’ motivation is an important content of teaching,especially for students with learning difficulties (hereinafter referred to as the"underachievers") to stimulate learning motivation. However, low learning motivation isthe common problem of the junior middle school students for learning physics. Therefore,based on investigation and study in junior high school physics students, this paper exploresthe psychological causes of underachievers and puts forward with some effective strategiesto stimulate motivation of these students in learning physics.This study is based on the theory of psychology and education. It is also combinedwith physical discipline characteristics and psychological characteristics of junior highschool students. In the first, it defines the concept of underachievers in physics. Secondly,combined with the relevant literature, students’ interviews and the analysis of the relatedfactors affecting the underachievers in physics, this study determines to studyunderachievers’ physics learning motivation level from six aspects. They are cognitivedrive, ego-enhancement drive, affiliated drive, self-efficacy, attribution of success andfailure, ego-will etc. And compared with the gifted students, it explores psychologicalcauses of the underachievers as well. Thirdly, according to the questionnaire survey to thejunior middle school physics teachers and the teaching situation in the countryside juniormiddle school, this study has formulated the corresponding teaching tragedies forunderachievers in physics.Practice shows that the methods proposed in this paper have a good operability andteaching effect, which can provide some valuable reference for the junior middle schoolphysics teaching. These methods are the questioning incentive strategy in class, theexperimental culture interest incentive strategy, the staging standard recognition strategyand the portfolio assessment strategy and so on.
