During my work as Mandarin Language Assistant at two primary schools in Wellington, New Zealand, I found that the character teaching in these two schools deserves serious study. Therefore, it is necessary to make deep research on the character teaching in Wellington primary schools, to find the crux of the problems and discuss the solutions to the problems, thus improve character teaching and promote Mandarin Chinese teaching in New Zealand.Using classroom observation and interview, this study investigates the teaching philosophy, teaching model and teaching methods of the character teaching in Wellington primary schools. Meanwhile, using questionnaire, this study also investigates the teaching effectiveness and students’ view on character learning as a supplement. The end of the study summarizes the problems found in the research and makes corresponding suggestions.Through the research, I conclude that there exist three major problems in the character teaching in Wellington primary schools:the deviation of teaching philosophy, the lack of systematic and students’ high forgotten rate. And they can be solved through improving the character ability of New Zealand local Chinese teachers, writing a character textbook suitable for New Zealand children and adopting various teaching methods and exercise forms.This paper mainly consists of four parts:Part1:The academic significance and practical value of studying overseas character teaching.Part2:The results of relevant researches on teaching characters to foreigners, and the basic thinking and methods of this research.Part3:The research and analysis of the character teaching in two primary schools in Wellington. This part mainly consists of the analysis of teaching procedures based on classroom observation and interview and the analysis of teaching effectiveness based on questionnaire survey.Part4:Solution discussion to the character teaching in Wellington primary schools. This part summarizes the problems found in the research and discusses possible solutions.The end of this article systematically summarizes the whole paper and reviews the inadequacies.
