With the improvement of the emphasis on science education, many education researchers have payed much attention to he model and modeling. “Developing and using models”is one of the 8 “practices”, which from the A Framework for K-12 Science Education: Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Core Ideas. During science learning, the model is often provided by the teacher, as a tool to facilitate the observation and understanding, but not the ability to develop the learner’s point of view and modeling model. Model and modeling is often seen as an abstract skill, for elementary school students junior section who do not have such capabilities.With the development of the study of children, it was found that the child has the ability to be stronger than previously assumed. In the The Next Generation of Science Education Standards also pointed out: "modeling can start from the lowest grade." Inspired by this, I take the "schematic" as the model type, choose many one to three grade students which from a primary school in Shanghai for the study, to study whether the students has the ability to build the schematic, their ability level and their thinking characteristics reflected by building schematic.The study designs appropriate theme for the students, the whole modeling practices contains "build the initial schematic- evaluate the use of schematic- modify schematic diagram- shows a schematic diagram " Combined with case studies, learn about their thinking characteristics.Through data analysis and case studies, and concluded that:(1) students from grade one to three have the initial ability to build schematic,with the higher grades,the students ability to build an initial schematic also improved.(2) The ability to build a schematic diagram is related to the observation of the objective world and related phenomena or things.
