Politics, Public Opinion And Gender - Shen Peizhen From The Perspective Of Gender Theory

The development of Chinese feminism starts in the late Qing Dynasty, begun by male intellectuals for political purpose of the national construction, then some women gradually generated ideas of female rights and obligations and their political pursuits. Peizhen Shen is a controversial figure in the late Qing Dynasty, experienced image collapse from "female hero" to "female rouge". Through her political career, she can be seen fighting with the social public opinion and traditional patriarchal ideology in the early Republic of China.Through this article, through her activities, we can explore the development of feminist activity against the obstacle of the traditional and new ideas under the complex of society.This paper is divided into four parts: Firstly, through the life of Peizhen Shen, we can figure out the outline of her political ambitions andfeminist thoughts; Secondly, through her political activities and the case with Tong Guo, we can figure out the difficulties faced by the feminists during the Republicof China; Thirdly, through the changes of the social public opinions of Peizhen Shen, we can see the social public opinions and panics of feminist movements; Lastly, through the case of Shen Peizhen, we can see that the development of women’s rights is limited and restricted in the patriarchalsociety, and struggling really hard.
