The representation thinking ability is an ability, through which the individualobtain perception of the objective things, form the corresponding representation in themind and process and transform the representation. In the teaching of Geography, thecultivation and improving of the representation thinking ability is particularlyimportant,it is an important reflection of the new curriculum’ requirement of thestudents’ ability’ development. Geographic images is tools that using graphical ortabular form of visual image storage and transmits geographic information.They arevivid,intuitive and general, and they are the significant character that distinguishbetween Geography and other disciplines. In the geography teaching in Middleschool,the design and application of the image is an important process to helpstudents understand the geographic things and promote the representation thinkingability. Therefore, reasonably and sufficiently using of geographic images andexerting its maximum teaching value, is the goals and objectives of the designing andusing geography images in middle school’ geography teaching.This article is based on pedagogy, cognitive psychology and cartography theoryas the instruction, divide the representation thinking ability into perceptualrepresentation thinking ability, memorizing representation thinking ability andimagination representation thinking ability, and take this as the main line, combinewith my own geography teaching practice, analysis, compare and summarize a largenumber of cases of geographic image designing and application, and detailed sharethe author’ views and opinions of the geography image teaching. It is the basis of theoptimization of geography teaching in the future.This is the result of this paper:(1) Introduce the background, purpose and significance of this article and theresearch contents and methods, and define the relevant concepts, and analyzes of theresearch status and related theory.(2)Introduce the status of the cultivation of geography representation thinkingability, and detailed analysis the feasibility of improving students’ thinking ability using geographic images through the pedagogy and psychology conclusions, the newcurriculum, the development of the modern education technology and thecharacteristics of geographic images. Analyze shows that the use of geographicimages is the important way to improve the geographical representation thinkingability, is an important role in geography teaching.(3)Detailed analysis the case of the geography image designing and itsapplication in geography teaching, take the three types of representation thinkingability as the clues. Hope to provide practical reference for the geography teaching toenhance students’ ability, and optimize the teaching of geography in the future.
