In recent years, China is enjoying rapid economic development and international standing improvement. Accordingly, Chinese government starts to change their Chinese promotion strategy from foreign Chinese teaching to all-round international promotion. By cooperation with foreign universities, China is building a lot of Confucius Institute, where an increasing number of people in foreign countries study Chinese. In United States, besides universities, more and more middle and elementary schools start offering Chinese lessons. And the development of Chinese teaching for the children in the United States is becoming the focus of teachers and students gradually.An increasing number of students major in teaching Chinese as a foreign language work as volunteers for NOCFL to teach Chinese overseas with the increasing popularity of Chinese learning. The reality of Chinese teaching in foreign countries plays an important role in international promotion of Chinese. How to teach Chinese according to local conditions is always the main subject for Chinese volunteer teachers overseas.The author will be working for two years as a Chinese volunteer teacher in Mt. Vernon Exploratory Elementary School, which is a partner of Kennesaw State University in Georgia, USA. This paper summarizes the teaching characteristics of this school through analyzing its current situation of Chinese teaching for the children. Based on this, the author proposes the suggestions about promoting teaching material, teaching syllabus and teaching faculty. This paper intends to help Chinese volunteer teachers have a better understanding of Chinese teaching for the children in the United States and serves as the reference for related research.The first chapter of this paper is introduction, which discusses the origin of this study, significance of the subject, summary of research about Chinese teaching for the children, research content and research method. The second chapter discusses the situation of Chinese teaching for the children in the United States and at Mt. Vernon Exploratory Elementary School. The third chapter discusses the research about Chinese teaching for the children at Mt. Vernon Exploratory Elementary School, including American students’ characteristics, their learning habits and the analysis about the Chinese teaching for the children there. The fourth chapter discusses the characteristics, problems and suggestions of Chinese teaching for the children at Mt. Vernon Exploratory Elementary School. The fifth chapter is the conclusion.The innovation of this paper lies in:first, the topic of this paper is novel, and it studies and analyzes the Chinese teaching for the children at Mt. Vernon Exploratory Elementary School; second, the author conducts some classroom observation, deep interviews, questionnaires and detailed analysis.
