In recent years, researches on picture-books have gradually changed to pay more attention to the reader’s response, instead of the work itself. Among various elements of picture-books, the subject, characters and plots all have important meanings. This paper aims at researching children’s understanding of the role of images through picture-books.Picture-books’boom has also led to the rich diversity of character images. This paper selects a kind of sensitive visual image -- ghosts, which often appear in picture-books, and the content analysis was conducted on the characteristics of ghost images in picture-books. In combination with the reality of children’s understanding of fantasy things as ghost, the paper tries to know how children construct and understand ghost images in picture-books Based on the study of literature reading on the reader response theory and schema theory, and the method of qualitative research is adopted to collect ghost images in picture-books and the characteristic of ghost image is analyzed. Rooted in the children’s cognition of ghost images, it aims to observe and understand children’s reaction to picture-books by reading and interviewing.The results of the study show that, children pay more attention to ghosts’ expression and action than image itself, and they do have fear of ghosts due to their wicked and violent personality, however, there is no obvious difference between boys and girls; deconstruction and reconstruction of different degrees of ghost images are done by children, and compared with different modeling, children can combine their understanding of ghosts in picture-books with their own experience; different approaches of reading influence children’s reaction to ghosts; ghost images in picture-books are proper for children to read.Based on the conclusion of the research, the last chapter of this paper gives some suggestions:first, to understand the process of children’s reading picture books should be given more attention, pay attention to children’s reading of the emotional experience and the reconstruction of the story content, while having a tolerant attitude towards the differences, encourage children to think independently, interact fully with picture-books; secondly, due to multiple subject and contents of picture-books on ghost, the ghost image picture-book will not cause fear to children, therefore preschool teachers and parents could take this sensitive topic as ghost picture books into consideration in the process of selecting books for children.
