A Study On The Teaching Of Chinese Words In American Primary Schools

From September,2014 to February,2015, the author went to R Montessori Public Charter School, in Eugene, Oregon, US, for five months Internship. During these five months, the writer taught Chinese there and collected abundant teaching materials. The paper selected the class Ⅰ worked and my Chinese vocabulary teaching as the main research object. I used six kinds of research methods in my paper, the main method is Action Research Method, the other methods are Classroom Observation, Case Study, Literature Review, Log Reflection method and Interview method. According to these researches, I got some Chinese vocabulary teaching strategies aimed at American children, I also found out some importance and difficulties of teaching Chinese words to American kids, the difficulties the new TCSOL teacher might meet during his or her teaching when they came to the United States. Additionally, I also tried to give some advices to the new TCSOL teachers whom will teach Chinese in the United States.The paper mainly consists of seven parts. In the first chapter, we talked about the meaning and the reason of the research, the other section of chapter 1 is the literature review of the relative researches. These are followed by the research method and the research scheme in chapter 2. In the Chapter 3, I analyzed the teaching situation from the teaching method of R school, the students’ability and language competence, their attitude towards to Chinese. I analyzed the typical teaching case in my teaching journal in the chapter 4 and found out some problem of my Chinese vocabulary teaching. According to these results, I made a new teaching plan called the 1st Teaching Plan, I used it in each of my class, meanwhile, I made a new teaching plan for the whole group in the Chapter 5. In the Chapter 6,I verified my 1st teaching plan and worked out a completed teaching plan called the 2nd teaching plan which consisted of three tiny lessons. In the end, I got the conclusions above.The aim of my research is to improve my teaching ability, with reflecting on my teaching journals and the class records, I found out some useful teaching strategies in teaching Chinese vocabulary to American students and many defects of my teaching. I made introspections many times with the Action Research Method, I hope these will help me improve my teaching as a new TCSOL teacher and also as a MTCSOL, I also hope my research can be helpful to both other new TCSOL teachers or MTCSOL just like me. In addition, I hope it may be useful to enrich the vocabulary teaching approaches in teaching Chinese to other people as a foreign language.
