Since 2004, the new high school curriculum reform program has been performed for 11 years in China. It has popularized an exploration-centered, diversified teaching method, thereby bringing some delightful changes to the teaching. We should note, however, that teachers tend to instill factual knowledge in class, which is still a widespread phenomenon that causes poor teaching efficiency. In recent years, many scholars begin to focus on the core concept of curriculums, and thus "teaching based on core concept" has been advocated by many famous educational experts. Since the study of the core concept of High School Biology Curriculum is far from perfect in China, this paper elucidated the corresponding core concept and discussed the teaching strategies thereof, which was illustrated by the "Homeostasis and the Environment" module from the biology textbook for high schools by the People’s Education Press (PEP).A large number of monographs on the study of the core concept and core periodical literature being referred to, this paper defined the core concept of high school biology and thereby summarized the module core concept. Firstly, through in-depth study of the curriculum standard and textbook, it sorted out the conceptual knowledge of the module; secondly, by analyzing the interrelation, inclusiveness and master-slave relationships between concepts, it established the knowledge framework of each chapter and thereby summarized corresponding core concept; finally, to check the dependability of what was summarized as core concept, questionnaire survey was made of some high school biology teachers in Guiyang city. By analyzing the internal consistency reliability obtained from the questionnaire, it concluded that the core concept herein is highly dependable.After the survey of the status quo of concept teaching in two senior high schools in Guiyang city, this paper concluded that the improper concept learning is an important factor hindering high school students’learning of biology. Accordingly, suggestions about core concept teaching and five teaching strategies were proposed. Besides, taking "the living environment of cells" as an example, the author devised and taught a demonstration class which turned out to be a great success.In conclusion, the teaching based on core concept is an economical, effective teaching method; it is helpful for teachers to use textbooks in a creative manner.
