Excessive test anxiety has turned out to be a tremendous bearing on middle school students’ academic performance and physical as well as psychological health, which drives numerous researchers to do tentative studies of how to ease middle school students’ anxiety. Studies have suggested that group counseling can relieve students’ anxiety, but the effectiveness of group counseling hasn’t been explored yet. Therefore, this paper is a tentative study of the effectiveness of group counseling done to middle school students based on the quantitative(meta-analysis) and qualitative researches(content analysis method). The results of quantitative studies are shown below: 1) Group counseling does work in alleviating students’ test anxiety; 2) It is most effective when the total counseling time is not less than 600 mins, followed by 300-600 mins and less than 300mins; 3)The times of group counseling reaching 7 is best, followed by 8, less than 6 and more 8; 4) it also works most when the time lasts 70-100 mins for every time, followed by less than 40 mins and 45-60mins; 5) A group with 10-20 students proves best, followed by less than 10 and more than 20; 6)The students with medium and high test anxiety benefit a lot; 7)The volunteer students can benefit more from the group counseling; 8)The effect of the junior middle school students is more obvious than high school students; 9) Single intervention is superior to the multiple intervention. Cognitive-focused intervention comes to the first place, followed by emotion-focused intervention. Due to the small sample, the effect of study as well as exam skills training and psychoanalytic therapy is still uncertain. The results of qualitative studies are shown below :1)The leader’s capability includes good personality, good leadership, keen insights, strain capacity, reflective ability, managing the roles of leaders well and rich experience in group counseling;2)an unqualified leader will have a negative impact on the effects of group counseling from his disposition, leadership style, attitudes, what he says and professional skills to his capacity to deal with emergency, insight and emotion;(3)The most significant therapeutic factors are cognitive changes, strategies of learning and taking an exam, catharsis, followed by the group atmosphere, information transfer and instillation of hope, as well as intimacy, skills in adjusting emotion, leaders and universality;(4)The group counseling can cover these topics ranging from learning strategies, emotional adjustment skills and cognition to testing techniques, self-efficacy, and learning motivation;(5)Discussions, activities and lectures have their own advantages and disadvantages, therefore, leaders might as well choose the right method according to the specific situation. This paper goes to great length to construct an effective intervention model in relieving students’ test anxiety based on the quantitative and qualitative analysis as well as 32 articles about the meta-analysis,which is expected to have a certain reference value for similar researches conducted in the future.
