This dissertation makes use of questionnaire surveys, written interviews and practical investigations to thoroughly discuss and explore the development of drama education in the middle and primary schools of Shanghai City. Questionnaire surveys and written interviews mainly target at middle and primary school students, teachers, parents and relevant experts and scholars and strive to have a comprehensive attention to the overall conditions of drama education in Shanghai middle and primary schools; practical investigations concentrate on the case researches made to Shanghai World Foreign Language Middle School, Shanghai Junlian School and Shanghai Kangjian Foreign Language School and systematically exhibits the status quo of drama education in the middle and primary schools from the aspects such as drama education’s curriculum setting, content of courses, teacher training and audience analysis. Through the comprehensive research and analysis, it can be concluded that drama education in Shanghai middle and primary schools currently shows a universal social support and great demand from teachers and students but a slow development, teacher shortage and teaching model imperfectness. Meanwhile, the author, based on the above development situations of drama education, tries to bring to feasible measures and plans for future drama education in Shanghai middle and primary schools for the purpose of making a call and effort for the integrated development of drama art in middle and primary schools.The dissertation makes discussions in six chapters. Chapter I discusses the relevant concepts and investigation scope of drama education, including the definition and purpose of drama, development outline plan of drama education in both China and the West, relevant drama education literature reviews, and concept comparison between drama education and educational drama; Chapter II analyzes the questionnaire surveys and written interviews to the development of drama education in Shanghai middle and primary schools and based on the primary data, comprehensively collates the status quo of drama education in Shanghai middle and primary schools; Chapter III mainly directs at the drama education pilot in three different types of schools to develop the field research on and concludes that there are three forms of drama education, i.e. non-development of drama education, relatively complete curriculum system of drama education and “text-based drama” which provide the fully practical verification for the author’s further analysis from the first perspective and practice; Chapter IV theoretically summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of middle and primary school drama education in Shanghai on account of research materials; Chapter V proposes a rational and urgent drama teaching scheme to contribute to the popularization of drama education in Shanghai middle and primary schools; and Chapter VI, summary and prospect.
