SUN Li was a famous Chinese modern and contemporary novelist and his distinguished artistic style made him the representative of Lotus Lake School. The novel “Lotus Creek” earned him high fame, becoming a shining star among the Chinese liberated-area literature and the classic textbook in Chinese middle schools. With the development of society and the transition of students, the role of “Lotus Creek” had changed.Exploring the teaching value of materials is the core of education field to the teaching staff. The article gives a comprehensive analysis to the teaching value of “Lotus Creek”, based on 7 different versions of middle school Chinese textbooks and 26 teaching cases on “Lotus Creek” including teaching records, design and inspirations, linking the text interpretations researchers explored and etc. Through the review on the existing literature and researches, the research is aimed to, firstly, locating “Lotus Creek” in Chinese language education and confirming its teaching functions. Secondly, offering recommendations for improvement in view of existing shortage, in order to provide all kinds of teaching methods for educators. This paper is divided into six parts.The first chapter introduces the research work of the author. The second chapter includes the literary interpretation on “Lotus Creek” from the perspectives of the subject contents and the artistic features of the novel. Although the previous researchers have made in-depth analysis on the subject, characters, writing skills and the expressive language, they learned little about the unique writing structure of the novel. Hence, further discussions will be made on this regard. The third chapter makes comparison among the different editions of “Lotus Creek” in the compilation of the middle school Chinese textbook, including People’s Education Press edition, Liaohai Education Press edition, Hebei Education Press edition, Guangdong Education Press edition and Shanghai Education Press edition. It is detected that except for the Shanghai Education Press edition, the Chinese textbooks of all other editions focus on discussing the main idea and characters’ personality, as well as asking students to understand the writing skills of this novel. While that of the Shanghai Education Press edition has complied “Lotus Creek” into the thematic unit of “artistic conception” and emphasizes the cultivation of students’ aesthetic ability. The fourth chapter gives an overview of the 26 teaching cases and works out four classes of teachers’ favorite teaching contents based on the published teaching records and the teaching designs of the front-line teachers. It is detected that teachers’ interpretation is either based on the literary interpretation of the previous researches or making adjustments according to students’ learning situation. When the teaching content reappears, teachers will use different teaching methods to make different classroom effects. The fifth chapter concludes the author’s improvement suggestions to the teaching contents specific to the structure features of “Lotus Creek” neglected in previous researches and the unique teaching points uncovered by current teachers. The national traits of the Chinese people reflected in “Lotus Creek”, the non-plot structure and the features of “poetic novel” are used as the teaching points of the subject content. The author believes that the four features of “poetic novel” and the unique female perspective adopted by Sun Li are the core education value reflected by “Lotus Creek”. Teachers will provide students with literature reading guidance in the teaching process so that the reading strategy of the students will be improved to some extent and the high-cost-low-efficiency situation in current Chinese teaching will be changed. The sixth chapter is the conclusion of the author’s research work and presents the confusions about the teaching pre-design of “Lotus Creek” and the uncertain positioning of this novel in Chinese teaching.Interpretation of national character, structure with non-plot, four features of "Poetic novel" and female perspective are the supplements referred by author to the novel teaching, hoping inspiring new ideas for the teaching work of "Lotus Creek" in the future.
