As the progress of the times, the human society changes dramatically in such aspects as politics, economy, and population, the formal education system is becoming more and more old, and doesn’t fit the rapidly changing society. Especially to the 21st century, to construct the national lifelong education system put forward the more strict requirements for the mission and function of education. With formal education is gradually exposed the shortcomings towards institutionalization, people start to take notice non-formal education and informal education. The two different forms of education truly embodies the essence of lifelong education, not only in the fact broke through the range of formal education and increase the social members enjoy the opportunity of education effectively, also pay more attention to learners’ interest, learner-centered and depends on the learners’ intrinsic motivation to learn new knowledge.This paper based on formal education exists inherent disadvantages as the breakthrough point, deeply studies the three education forms:formal education, non-formal education and informal education. The introduction part analyzes the problem put forward and the research purpose, research train of thought and method, the definition of core concepts as well as the domestic and foreign related research review; The body of the first chapter analyzes the appearance and development, the characters and functions of normal education, and lists five educator’s criticism and reflection about formal education became institutionalized; The second chapter analyzes the main reason about the emergence, the characteristics and function, and several typical forms of non-formal education; The third chapter mainly analyzes the informal learning, the characteristics and functions and the main practice way of the informal education. The fourth chapter from two dimensions to compare the advantages and disadvantages of formal education and non-formal education, formal education and informal education respectively, and summarizes that the competitive and complementary relationship between the three different forms of education, aimed at putting forward some suggestions to improve the shortcoming and deficiencies.Through the analysis and comparison of the three education forms, and draw some conclusions finally:First, in spite of the formal education exist shortcomings and deficiencies, because of its characteristics about integrity, strict delicate and efficient, it will be persistent; Second, although formal education itself unable to overcome its inherent drawbacks, but due to the rise of non-formal education and informal education everywhere, this paper argues that formal education can make up for the disadvantages through non-formal education and informal education, at the same time formal education can also get inspiration from the two different forms of education, and modify its own in some way; Third, non-formal education and informal education also is not perfect, also need to further improve and develop their own shortcomings, therefore in constructing the process of lifelong education, the three different forms of education, there is a competitive and complementary relationship between the three different forms of education.
