Based on dialectic and historical materialist methodology, the thesis synthesizes literature review and a case study in order to analyze the present postgraduate entrance examination system with a historical review of the system and the first-hand data. Comparing our system with American GRE, the present thesis reveals the different features of the two.The present postgraduate entrance examination system in our country is a typical "Administrative Selection" in nature. Every process from plan making, examination subjects setting, exam organizing to students admittance reflects the process of issuing and carrying out of "administrative orders". The defects of the system is exposed and the system has become harder and harder to accommodate the reform and development of tertiary education and society. While in some education advanced countries, there are many theories and experiences in the field of postgraduate entrance examination which can be used by our country. American GRE is a typical "Professional Selection" system. The "Professional" orientation of policy making and admission process is, in a sense, a good reference to our entrance examination system innovations.The present thesis is, on one hand, trying to reveal the major defects of our entrance examination system; on the other hand, suggesting a vision of system innovations. Absorbing the rational part of present entrance examination systems of our country and other relevant countries, and considering our national conditions and innovations, the present thesis suggests that our entrance examination system is changing from "Administrative Selection" to "Professional Selection".
