In this paper, using the combination of positive and speculative study methods, the author mainly discusses Cai Yuanpei's educational thoughts of Chinese from six aspects systematically, that is, the thoughts of speech language and written language, the purpose and the content of Chinese education, the Chinese teaching method, the thoughts of morality and teachers. For example: in the aspect of Chinese educational purpose, Cai Yuanpei paid emphasis upon both instrumental nature andhumanistic nature of Chinese. In the view of Cai Yuanpei, the purpose of Chinese education contains the following: one is to develop the students' ability of using Chinese in order to meet the need of real life; the other is to mold the morality and sentiment for a person to meet the spiritual need of exceeding the material level. With the content of Chinese education, Cai Yuanpei objected to respecting Confucius and reading classic blindly, arguing the content should be practical and humanistic. About Chinese teaching method, he critically inherited the traditional method. In his opinion, students' should be taught according to their individual differences and learning should be spontaneous, holding the view that scientific nature and practical nature should be united together. From the above, the author concludes Cai Yuanpei's thoughts of Chinese education possess the scientific, practical and humanistic features, the marrow of which is humanistic education thoughts of respecting humans, believing in humans and molding humans. Finally from the times background, individual personality and culture structures, the author analyzes the origination of Cai Yuanpei's educational thoughts of Chinese, and make some assessments.
