The spirits of the contemporary Chinese college students is of great concern to those who care the maturity of college students and the future of China in an age of global multi-polarization, economic globalization and China's vigorous development toward the comprehensive realization of comfortable life to her people. This thesis, in light of the author's long ideological and political work in college, attempts to analyze dialectically from a philosophical angle the diverse relativist tendencies of Chinese college students since the nineties of 20th century and their causes and put forward the countermeasures and proposals.Relativism is a rather influential philosophical trend in the Western and Chinese philosophical histories and the connotations of relativity and absoluteness and their relations are deeply discussed. Relativism embraces the reasonable factors of challenge of authority, courage of doubt and emancipation of thought though it is characterized by the views which exaggerate one-sidedly the relativity of things and cognition. Marxism gives relativism a reasonable dialectical evaluation, holding that dialectics includes but is not sum up by relativism. In real life, relativist tendencies are unavoidable in the behavior of some people due to the complexity of cognition and social practice. The contemporary college students, to some degree, manifest the relativist tendencies with their special characteristics. They demonstrate their relativist tendencies in mainly the following five aspects:(I) The cultural relativist tendency. The cultural relativism holds that different situations create different cultures, the evaluation languages and value standards ol'different cultures are different and that different cultures identify each other in mutual communication. Cultural relativism bears both progressiveness and limitations. The cultural relativist tendency of the college students demonstrates itself in random and superficial absorption, loss of cultural cognition as well as loftiness of cultural taste.(II) The moral relativist tendency. The moral relativism holds that moral is relative, different people have different morals and that there is no universal moral standards. On one hand, the moral relativism is negative in that it exaggerates the go-aheadism and liberty of moral value, on the other hand, it is positive to some extent when corrected. The moral relativist tendency of college students demonstrates in that they are indifferent to morals or go with the stream.(III) The political relativist tendency. The political relativism holds that no political view, attitude or evaluation is or ought to be authoritative and that people have their free choice to evaluate politics differently or to be indifferent to politics. The political relativist tendency ofcollege students demonstrates in both some difference from the main political views and their "hate and love" of the corruption of government officials.(IV) The consumption relativist tendency. The consumption relativism holds that people's consumption conditions and orientations are mainly decided upon their self-evaluation, esp. upon their likes and dislikes, not necessary to follow the universally recognized standards. The consumption relativist tendency of college students demonstrates in three aspects, "following the sensibility", being practical and doing things unconventional or unorthodox.(V) The value relativist tendency. The value relativism holds that any value proposition is not absolutely correct and that all the values are relative. It advocates tolerance and open-mindedness though it is negative in that it obliterates the possibility of the comparison between high values and low ones. The value relativist tendency of college students demonstrates in thre,e aspects, the multiplicity of value views, conflicts and intermissions of ideals and the malpractice of liberty.By analyzing the causes of the relativist tendencies of contemporary Chinese college students, the author holds that the social environment, school...
