Economic function of education is the function that education effects on the development of social economy. From its birthday, education includes economic function. However, people's knowing about education's economic function is a historical process. Economic function of education wasn't attached importance to until the Industrial Revolution . Economist and educational Economist began metric study on economic function of education after in Soviet published "Economic Meaning of National Education(1924)" in 1920's. There were two main genres, American genre and the Soviet Union genre. They are different in research method. So they are different in calculation results.According to times development and new economic reality, we must seek a new metric method on economic function of education in order to explain the existing economic problems. Economic function of education is extensive. In order to make research convenient, the article pays attention to on direct economic function of education. Direct economic function of education can represent in three fields: 1: the function in the development of science and technology. In the history of economic development, we can find that every great breakthrough of science and technology led to leap-style development of economy. Nowadays, science and technology's contribution rate in each country's economic development is very great. Education is one of the main springs of creating science and technology, especial high education. Science and technology research is one of its three main functions. 2: education system is a great consume system. Now the whole world market is almost a buyer's market. Stimulating demand is an important method to promote economic development. Population in educational system accounts for 25% of the whole population. They are at the age when consume demand is vigorous. Our country takes education as a new economic growth point, promoting popularization of higher education. Now our country's gross enrollment rate of higher education is nearly 15%. 3: education is a main constitute part of our country's the 3 rd industry according to the regulation of our country's national economy check. Employee's salary is taken as constitute part of GNP for education system.I put forward a new idea of calculating economic function of education according to three fields of economic function of education. Education's contribution rate to economic development =teacher's salary ÷ GNP + science and technology that education creates × science and technology's contribution rate to economic development + education consumption ×consume multiplier ÷GNP. I use this new method of education's economic function to calculate education's economic function contribution rate for 1997's and the result is 19.84%. This new idea has important inspire effect. Now the world economy is become more and more mature and domestic demand of our country is seriously deficient. Our education system should attach great importance to science and technology research, enlarge education development scale, fully exert demonstrate effect of company which stock can exchange, for making greater contribution to our national economic development.
