| As is know to all, effective classroom management ensures good teaching process. In order to improve our classroom teaching and enable our student to meet the needs of the new situation of the new century, we must change the old view of classroom management and adopt some new and effective approaches of classroom management. This thesis, based on a combination of relevant literature and the survey of the present situation of classroom management of the senior high schools in Shanghai, points out some existing problems of classroom management and puts forward some suggestions to solve these problems and to achieve better educational goals. It is to provide reliable evidence for the young teachers, beneficial references for the teacher-training departments and demonstrative materials further researches.In the quantitative section, the author, after making questionnaires of the teachers and students of 23 different senior high schools in Shanghai, comes to the following conclusion: 1. The management task of the teachers from the key schools and non-key schools is different in the emphasis of management 2. Teachers of different subjects manage their classrooms according to the characteristics of each subject. 3. Women teachers make better preparations of their lessons. They pay more attention to their classroom management, including the art of management while men teachers show simple way of management. 4. Teachers with AA degree pay more attention to the preparations of their lessons and classroom management than those with bachelor degrees. 5. Teachers of advanced level pay more attention to the art of management than the teachers of intermediate and elementary level, but their management view seems to be more traditional. 6. Young teachers with less than 5 years of teaching experience tend to get close to the students easily. And the longer teaching experience they have, the more capable they are in managing the class. 7. The teachers' use of talk in class is far from standard and satisfactory to the students and the study of the art of language use, including the use of sign language, should be emphasized. 8. Girls students are more timid and they are unlikely to bring about discipline problems. 9. Students of low study competence tend to divert their attention from their study and somewhat fear the teachers. 10. Students of senior one are better disciplined than older students and more interested in study. Teachers of senior three devote more to their teaching and can focus on improving the students learning ability instead of just teaching the students knowledge, but seem not so equal in treating the students.In qualitative section, the author, after observing ten demonstration lessons and three daily lessons, discovers: 1. Effective lessons have some basic techniques in common. 2. Teachers of science subjects and arts have different ways of managing their lessons. 3. There is an extraordinary gap between daily lessons and demonstration lessons.According to the present situation of classroom management in senior high schools in Shanghai, the author points out three main problems in the teachers' view and ways of classroom management: 1. The teachers' view and ways of classroom management are still rather traditional. 2. The teachers have not paid enough attention to the art of language use and the use of sign language. 3. The gap between the demonstration lessons and daily lessons is too big, especially obvious for the young teachers. Based on the investigation and the problems, the author makes seven suggestions: 1. The view of teacher-centeredness in classroom management should be shifted to student-centeredness. 2. Encourage the young teachers to master the basic techniques of classroom management in a shorter time. 3. Reinforce self-monitoring for the teachers to narrow the gap between the demonstration lessons and daily lessons. 4.
