How to classify the type of higher education institution is a world wide difficult issue, which affects the development and orientation of higher education institutions. With the development of the massification of higher education all countries' governments or all kinds of organizations have established their own criterion and system of classification, in order to ensure the healthy development. In the process of massification, in our country many higher education institutions can't evaluate themselves correctly or overestimate themselves instead of performing themselves according to their own level. The main reason runs as: our country hasn't constituted standard of classification and corresponding policy measurement scientifically and reasonably. The definition is fuzzy among different colleges or universities and the government lacks necessary supervision. Due to this, putting higher education institution classification in practice and establishing multi-evaluation system is the essential requirement for massification of higher education. Many researchers have presented various modes of classification, but the criterion, the comparison and the prediction of the future development remain as a hard question owing to the lack of quantitative researches, the dissertation attempts to solve these problems based on quantitative analysis.Through theoretic analysis-international comparison-empirical verification, the dissertation is divided into five chapters.The first chapter is theoretic analysis. After the analysis of higher education function, it establishes the theoretic basis of classification. The functional changes are concerned with differentiation and diversification. The former is caused by the development of changes, and the latter the emphasis attached to the functions.The second chapter is history and comparison research. It's recognized that there still isn't scientific criterion of classification, the past classification is only to meet the special demand in certain time. The classification of higher education institution of American> Japan ^ England and German provides the reference, based on which, the research establishes the classification index under the guidance of higher education function in the classification dimension; Taking the index of resource support and condition into account; Taking the influence and extent of society recognition; all of which constitute the conception and method of classification in accord with the situation of our country.The empirical verification covers the following three chapters.The third chapter moves from theoretical to empirical verification. Through the investigation of higher education institutions traits, adopting correlative analysis statisticmethod, it selects 17 central trait indexes.The fourth chapter is about the mode construction of regular higher education institutions in China. By the classification dimension, it establishes our country's classification criterion, based on which our country's 1517 regular higher education institutions are classified into four categories: Doctoral/Research Universities, Master's Universities, Bachelor's University and Professional Colleges, every category includes several small categories.The last chapter makes prediction and suggestion to the classification development and management in China's higher education in the future.
