Objective: The aim of this study is to understand the current situation of higher education institutions in Liaoning Province,to compare and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the classification research of higher education institutions in other regions,to construct an evaluation index system suitable for the classification of higher education institutions in Liaoning Province based on the actual situation of Liaoning Province,and classify 54 undergraduate higher education institutions in Liaoning Province.Methods: This study used 54 undergraduate higher education institutions in Liaoning Province as the research subjects.The literature research method and the comparative research method were adopted by this research to understand the classification methods of higher education institutions at home and abroad,and learn the classification experience from this higher education institutions.Based on the actual situation,we proposed a reasonable classification concept that was in line with the actual development of Liaoning higher education institutions.The expert consultation was further adopted to establish a hierarchical classification index system for higher education institutions in Liaoning Province.Finally,the factor analysis was used to test the scientific of the index system.SPSS 20.0 software was used to statistical analysis.The general situation and index system items of the survey institution were analyzed by general descriptive analysis,and the structural validity of the index system was examined by factor analysis.The empirical study was carried out to perform an index system fitting test of 54 undergraduate higher education institutions in Liaoning Province.Results: Through the expert consultation,we determined that Liaoning Province higher education institutions can be classified according to the school orientation and the subject attribute.According to the school orientation design,the five primary indicators and ten secondary indicators were used to construct a classification evaluation framework for Liaoning higher education institutions.The five primary indicators were degree programs,construction of disciplines,faculty,talents cultivation,scientific research,respectively.And the ten secondary indicators were concentration of Ph.D programs,domestic rankingof the subject,international influence of the discipline,number of national level talents,proportion of Ph.D degree teachers,ratio of master and Ph.D degree teachers,ratio of master and undergraduate students,proportion of professional degree graduate students,proportion of investment on basic research,and per capita scientific research funds of full-time faculty.On this basis,through the expert consultation,the classification criteria were determined according to the number and proportion of ten secondary indicators,and all higher education institutions were vertically divided into research institution,applied institution for research and applied institution,respectively.In this study,there are 2research institutions,7 applied institutions for research,and 45 applied institutions.According to the subject attributes,the institutions were divided into three types: liberal arts based institution,science based institution,and single subject based institution(art,sports,public security).In this study,there were 12 liberal arts based institutions,35 science based institutions and 7 single subject based institutions.Finally,the combination of the vertical classification method of the school orientation and the horizontal classification method of the subject attribute determined the comprehensive types of the nine general higher education institutions.In this study,there are 0 liberal arts based institutions for research,2 science based institutions for research,0 single subject based institutions for research,2 liberal arts based institutions for applied research,5 science based institutions for applied research,0 single subject based institutions for applied research,10 liberal arts based institutions for application,28 science based institutions for application,7 single subject based institutions for application.Conclusion: In this study,54 undergraduate higher education institutions in Liaoning Province were classified according to the orientation and subject of the school,and the classification criteria were more scientific,which laid the foundation for the scientific development of higher education in Liaoning Province.It can be seen from the classification results that the current higher education institutions in Liaoning Province lack top institutions for research.
