Comprehensive School Health Education In The United States: Michigan Curriculum Model

Our society is stepping into a new globalization times with other countries in a macrocosm way. Promoted by WHO, new conception of health promotion has spread through all over the world and developed increasingly. Health Promotion is not only a responsibility of Public Health Department but also Education Department. The world educationists consider the key to health education is children and adolescents consentaneously. In the stage of adolescent, schools are the main living and studying places, so school health education is very important in the life-long education, especially for the growing children and adolescents. Therefore it is significant for curriculum reformation of each country to study and discuss how to set up an effective school health education model.America is the country which developed health education earlier and reformed it more successfully in the world. American school health education provides many helpful experiences for health education reformation in the world from theories and practices. Comprehensive school health education has been derived from the studying and discussing of school health education curriculum models, and Michigan Model is the representative. With the enlargement of the health education curriculum content and the perfection of the curriculum structure, Michigan Model has become a standard model in the whole state, even in the other states or districts in America.From the point of comparative education, I expatiate and analyze the development history, content structure, the implementing characteristics and effect of Michigan Model, furthermore explain Michigan Model's positive effect for American comprehensive school health education. Simultaneously, I hope to develop and consummate Chinese school health education continually through my study.
