In our daily life, everyone is difficult to avoid the difficulties and setbacks situation occur, and these situations often cause undesirable performance of an individual to obtain a negative evaluation. People to avoid this situation, self-protection mechanism will start, and in many self-protection strategies, self-handicapping is one of them. I believe that many people have had similar experiences, like before an important performance(such as exams, competitions), and usually do not do something to do. Such as watching usually do not watch television, especially with do not often contact phone chat with friends, and even sudden cold, insomnia, physical discomfort and other symptoms. If the performance is not ideal, it is not their ability, but the impact of these factors. One typical example of this behavior is the self-handicapping.Self-handicapping is a cognitive strategy by which people avoid effort in the hopes of keeping potential failure from hurting self-esteem. Physical self-esteem is a person’s evaluation of their physical self, including evaluations of both physical appearance and physical competencies. It is a specific area of the self-esteem. Including physical self-worth(PSW), sport capacity(SC), physical condition(PC), attractive body(AB) and physical fitness(PF) five dimensions. Sports participation is a college student in physical education or outside of class to participate in the exercise in physical and psychological investment.In order to explore physical self-esteem, the relationship between the self-handicapping and sports participation, provide a theoretical basis for the Mental Health Research, In this study, self-handicapping sources, concepts and research status of sport psychology theory of self-esteem on the basis of a detailed commentary, the use of literature, questionnaire, mathematical statistics. From North China University of Technology in a random sample of 847 non-sports students for the study. Investigation and analysis of aspects of physical self-esteem, self-handicapping behavioral tendencies and sports participation behavior. Using physical self-esteem, self-handicapping and sports participation for the three indicators, designed and completed the preparation of the "College students participating in sports situation questionnaire." These findings were then systematically statistical analysis, and the following conclusions:1. College students overall level of physical self-esteem is high, attitudes toward participation in sports is also very positive forward, because most college students exercise is to enhance their physical fitness, self-handicapping behaviors belong to the middle level, indicating that today’s college students are in the physical and psychological health status.2. Significantly different gender College students in physical self-esteem, sports participation and self-handicapping perception feelings, female students perceive the physical self-esteem is significantly higher than male college students; female students perceive the self-handicapping is significantly higher than male college students; but sports participation of female college students was significantly lower than male college students.3. College students in different grades were no significant differences in body self-esteem and self-handicapping in. But in sports participation, different grades of College students have significant differences, including sophomore significantly higher than other seniors, juniors significantly higher than seniors.4. Between physical self-esteem and self-handicapping significant positive correlation; and self-handicapping and sports participation in two variables showed a significant negative correlation; there was a significant negative correlation between sports participation and physical self-esteem.5. Partially mediated between physical self-esteem and self-handicapping in sports participation. Physical self-esteem direct impact on sports participation. At the same time, self-handicapping not only a direct impact on sports participation, but also by the action of physical self-esteem of an indirect sports participation.
