This paper systematically expounds the reasons and the meaning of the study.It analyses the cognitive principles of mental map from the viewpoint of Cognitive Psychology and explains the meaning and effects of establishing mental map in the Geography teaching. Besides, some methods and ways of how to establish mental map are alos discussed in the paper from angles of teaching and learning.The essay consists of five parts: I . Part one:IntroductionIn this part , two reasons for making the study are explained:One is that considering the objects and the key to the Geography study as well as the characteristics of the study , we must make the study;The other is that current situation of Geography teaching which is not so satisfactory makes it necessary to make the study.What's more , the meaning of the study and the current situation as well as the current trend of the study are also analysed in this part.II. Part two:Cognitive principles of mental map are explained through the characteristics and ideas showed from the experiment of white mouse walking in a maze.III. Part three:The meaning and the effects of establishing mental map in the Geography teathing are expounded from the following three aspects:First, it is necessary for Geography teaching to establish mental map ;Second, establishing mental map can increase the effects of Geography teaching and reduce the learning burden of students.It's also a good way to develop the initiative ability of students.IV.
