The concept of map literacy is usually confused with that of map skill or map competence. Consequently, the content of map literacy is inexplicit to common people, mainly due to little literatures could give a scientific and comprehensive elaboration of the meaning of map literacy. Based on theories and state-of-art research progress of cartology and cartography education, the thesis with middle school students as its research object re-defines the meaning of map literacy on basis of literacy-meaning-mining and discourses its major characteristics, connected with the concept of cultivating modern citizens with necessary geography literacy that proposed in our country's new centennial elementary curriculum and education reform. Furthermore, the author concludes that the concept of map literacy are the integrated reflections about its organic compositions of knowledge, skill, competence, method, emotion, attitude and value orientation pertaining to map, which plays an indispensable role as individual takes part in social life, practises production or makes self-decision. In addition, the author discourses the significances of perfecting map literacy for middle school students at least serves for individual's fully development, advancing geography and its curriculum and promoting progress of social culture.The thesis takes America and UK as respective example. With research on Geography for Life: National Geography Standard and GCSE Geography, the author summarizes the experience and characteristics of cartography education abroad. At the same time, by the questionnaire or face-to-face interviews, the author investigated several groups of students from Nanjing centered on the current situations of map literacy training of middle school students. The results point out the current conditions of cultivating middle school students' map literacy and shortage of cartography education, as well as some other problems. Upon these, the thesis deeply explores current problems existing in map literacy training for middle school students, and also thinks back to reasons of them. Also, combined with domestic basic conditions, the author absorbs advance experience abroad selectively. Considering from ideology, school and social environment, the thesis tentatively gives map literacy training strategies for middle school students from curriculum standard, teaching and teacher, in order to promoting middle school students' map literacy and provide a reference for peer-reviewing. Hoping to arouse the corresponding experts and educators of the significance of cultivating students' map literacy, and endeavor their efforts for similar research.
