The traditional chemistry teaching used to focus too much emphasis on the targets of the knowledge and the technical ability, but less on cultivating the students' science literacy. Fortunately, since the June of 1999, the education for all-round development has been placed great importance on, and a new turn of elementary education reform started at the end of the last century, with the beginning of two important decisions made by the Ministry of National Affairs in 1999 and 2001. In the first decision about deepening the education reform and advancing the all round education, it was decided "to adjust and reform the course system, structure, contents, build up the new foundation education course system". And in the second decision, it was further explicit "to set up the foundation education course system coupled with the requirements of all round education quickly." Finally, Through full ferment and researches, the Ministry of Education drew up "the Foundation Education Course Reforms Outline", determined the reform target, and researched each course standard or guide line.In the July of 2001, one of the key points of the chemistry course reform was established in the Fulltime System Compulsory Education Chemistry Course Standard ( Experimental Draft), which was aimed to improve the students' science literacy. It was definitely required in "the Chemistry Course Standard of the Common Senior High School" that the course design of Senior High School should be focused on the improvement of the students' science literacy, and fix attention on their future development. What's more, the research on how to improve the students' science literacy and the practice "the education of the all round development" are greatly advantageous to change the role of our teachers, to raise the citizen's comprehensive character, and ultimately to push forward the all round education.Since 2005, the elementary education in Sichuan Chengdu has been promoting the New Course, applying new teaching materials and progressing the course reform. Meanwhile, I have been carrying on the chemistry teaching in junior middle school. The New Curricular Principle interests me greatly, especially on the science literacy, therefore, I have devoted my efforts to the task of studying the science literacy and attempted to combine the theories with my teaching practice. With several years' hard work, I have gained something about how to improve the Junior school students' science literacy in chemistry, and I would try to elaborate it in four parts. The strategies of improving the students' science literacy in junior middle school will be discussed in four chapters. First of all, the science literacy will be defined; next, the concerned theoretical basis will be analyzed; and then, the practice of improving my school students' science literacy in chemistry will be talked; finally, I will summarize the problems in my study and come up with some practicable methods to solve the problems and some measures to make it better in the future.During the past two years' teaching practice, I have constantly investigated and studied, and I have attempted to adopt the following approaches to cultivating the students' science literacy, such as expanding reading training, which can give the students overall understanding about science. Meanwhile, applying multi-media can improve students' science literacy from the aspects of listening and watching. Science investigation especially the small experiment at home benefits the students' interests in science. Furthermore, cooperation learning is useful to develop the student's collectivism and the cooperation consciousness. Nearly my two years' teaching practice proves that these methods can develop and raise the student's science literacy efficiently.
