History, as a foundation education subject which acts as a carrier of humanity quality education, has a bounden duty to develop humanistic spirit, show humanistic care and correct students'attitude towards humanity, especially in such a special historical age when humanities and humanistic spirit are being neglected owing to the market economy. The development of humanistic spirit is the key point of education advocated in the new foundation education course reform. How to achieve this teaching goal that teachers should try to develop students'humanistic spirit has become a main topic that many history teachers do research on. During the period of the new foundation education course reform, with views based on the present conditions of history teaching in middle schools, this article makes a concrete exposition of the development of humanistic spirit in four aspects. First, it talks about the definition and characteristics of humanistic spirit. Second, it focuses on the close relationship between the new foundation education reform and humanistic spirit. Third, it explains the standards, contents and principles of the development of humanistic spirit in middle school history teaching. Fourth, it elaborates on the strategies and approaches (including how to change the teachers'teaching ideas and how to help gain a good sense of humanity and etc.) and how to perform them in teaching practice.
