This paper mainly focuses on the theory and practice of Middle School Chinese teaching, taking the spirit of neo-rationalism as the angle of view. By the research on the current situation of Chinese teaching in middle schools, the author aims at finding out the misunderstanding as well as the wrong tendency, and then exploring the right direction of Middle School Chinese teaching. What are the criteria to evaluate Chinese teaching? Whether it helps to meet the requirements of improving the spiritual developments of the students, reaching the consolidation of instrumentality and humanity, upgrading the harmony of sensibility and rationality, as the author explains, could be one of the benchmarks.Education concerns the development of mankind. From the very beginning of human society, mankind has been interested in the development of themselves. The existence of this kind of interest , helps to the exploration and development of educational thinking. In the new century, education has become one of the hot topics among different people. The teaching of mother languages, especially, is the spotlight during the process of educational reforms in many countries. The teaching of mother language, is closely linked to the spiritual development of people, to the cultivation of cultural tradition and national spirit. In this sense, the teaching of mother languages has an extremely important role to play, and also, has a long way to go. Chinese teaching, has passed a zigzagged way. We have got many experiences as well as lessons. Based on the advanced educational theory at home and abroad, to exploring the existing problems of current Chinese teaching, should be helpful to us.This paper, by explaining on the disputation on the instrumentality and humanity of Chinese teaching, and then on the understanding of Chinese teaching by some well-known experts, draws a conclusion that we should consider the instrumentality and the humanity as equally important in Chinese teaching.Chinese teaching is based on our national tradition. Both sensibility and instrumentality are indispensable parts in class. Reaching the harmony of sensibility and rationality, should be the aim of mother language teaching. The neo-rationalism spirit , is helpful to reach this aim.The paper consist the following part:Part 1 is a detailed explaining on the neo-rationalism spirit, including its background and its essence.Chapter 2 talks about the relations between the neo-rationalism spirit and Chinese teaching in middle schools,including the following subjects: modernity and Chinese teaching, humanity and Chinese teaching,communicatvie dialogue and Chinese teaching, as well as the harmonious union of sensibility and rationality.Chapter 3 focuses on the teaching practice under the direction of the neo-rationalism. The author explains the principles and specific ways about how to adopt neo-reationalism in Middle School Chinese teaching.
