Macau Students' Computer Attitude And Academic Achievement

The main purpose of this research is to explore the factors affecting computer attitude, realize the factual situation of the computer attitude in secondary school students, and analyze the difference between students' personal background and the computer attitude, and the relationship between the computer attitude and the students' achievement. The study through documentation indicates the implicit meaning of computer attitude and its significances, which is on the basis of the "Computer Attitude Scale" (Taiwan, 2001), authored by Wang ShiJie. With the data from the survey of Macao secondary school students in the questionnaire of "Macao Secondary School Students' Computer Attitude", the study was analyzed statistically with the method of descriptive analysis, Pearson Product-moment Correlation and Multivariate Analysis. The results were shown as the following:First, the computer attitude of the secondary school students in Macao was relatively positive in general. "Favor on computer" was in the highest point whereas the self-will of computer using was in the lowest.Second, the effect of student's computer attitude was varied by the personal background of different students. In general, the computer attitude was significantly difference in the effect of gender, grade, time of learning computer, numbers of computer lessons per week, the usage of IT facilities in other subjects and the satisfaction of the quality in computer teaching. They were pointed as: (1) Different gender was shown with a significant difference in the study of students' computer attitude. Computer attitude in boys was highly positive related to the computer attitude than in girls. (2) A significant difference was reported in the computer attitude and the secondary school students in different grades. The computer attitude of Form 1 students was better than the students from Form 2, Form 3 and Form 4. (3) The relation between time in leaning computer and computer attitude was shown in significant difference. The longer time students learning in computer, the higher the computer attitude they have got. (4) The relation between the number of computer lessons per week and the computer attitude was shown in significant difference. The numbers of lessons per week was positively related to the computer attitude. (5) The relation between the usage of IT facilities in other subjects and the computer attitude was shown in significant difference. (6) The relation between the satisfaction of the quality in computer teaching and the computer attitude was shown in significant difference.Third, school achievement and computer attitude were apparently correlated; computer achievement was highly related to the computer attitude while computer achievement was positively related to the Computer Attitude Scale.As a conclusion, the mentioned outcomes were aimed to use in proposing strategies and suggestions for all IT educational organization, teachers in relevant subjects, secondary school students and their parents in Macao.
