At present, foreign language teaching consumes more time but produces fewer results in our country. How to develop the standard of foreign language teaching has become an urgent matter. However, to improve foreign language teacher professional qualities is the key to develop the standard of English teaching, so it has become the topic being discussed urgently how to promote foreign language teacher professional development. The study of foreign language teacher professional development began with the United States at the end of 1960s, which was in vogue in Europe and America in 1960s&1970s, while it didn't begin to be taken seriously until 1990s in China. Research content inclined more towards the aspect of theories, while the practical research related to the foreign language teacher development on their own is rare to be seen. Based on the investigation into English teachers of a county, the thesis is expected to learn of the basic situations of middle school English teacher professional development, and explore the countermeasures to promote the professional development of English teachers. The thesis consists of five part.The first part is to reveal the necessities and realistic significance of English teacher development as well as its main present problems and to raise the topic to be discussed in the paper.The second part is about literature, which mainly elaborates the study situations of foreign language teacher development in and abroad.The third part is about the research topic and methods ,including limiting concepts,the research topic as well as research methods .The fourth part is the results and analysis of the investigation, containing the an- alysis of teachers'basic situations and the aspects of English teacher professional development ,such as teachers'faith,knowledge,abilities, etc. The part is expected to find the existed problems by way of the analysis of the survey results.The fifth part aims to raise the countermeasures and make some practical suggestions so as to promote the Professional Development of English Teachers. The paper ends with the summary of research and recalling.
