Although many experts and scholars study teachers’ professional development athome and abroad, it is weak to study English teachers’ professional development ofcounty high school in less developed area at present. Teachers’ professionaldevelopment in less developed area contributes to the improvement of education leveland ensures the balanced development of basic education. Therefore, it is more urgentto promote English teachers’ professional development of senior high school in lessdeveloped area.The thesis consists of five chapters.Chapter One is the introduction. It explains the reasons for the topic, summarizesliterature review and illustrates the significance and the methods of the study.Chapter Two introduces the concept and theories of teachers’ professionaldevelopment. First of all, the chapter explains the concrete concepts of Englishteachers’ professional development in senior high school. Then it gives a briefintroduction to the related theories of teacher occupation specialization and teachers’professional development to make people know about the differences of the twoconcepts.Chapter Three investigates and analyzes the current situation of Englishteachers’ professional development in senior high school in Bin Chuan County. Firstly,the chapter states the characteristics of county high school in less developed area.Secondly, it analyzes English teachers’ professional qualities in senior high school inBin Chuan County based on the research results. Lastly, it summarizes variousshortcomings of English teachers’ professional development in senior high school inless developed area. The main shortcomings are as follows.English teachers in less developed area mostly lack the consciousness ofprofessional development and autonomous study ability. Their spoken English isslightly poor. Their expertise about English and some of related subjects andmulticultural knowledge are weak. The concepts of teaching and teaching methods ofsome English teachers are out-of-dated. They lack the independence of professional development and the feasible measures.Chapter Four explores and analyzes the external and internal factors thatinfluence English teachers’ professional development of county high school in lessdeveloped area.Chapter Five explores and brings forward the feasible measures that we shouldtake to strengthen English teachers’ professional development of county high schoolin less developed area. The measures must be concerned with the practical situationof county high school in less developed area. As far as the teachers are concerned,English teachers in less developed area should enhance the consciousness ofself-development and establish the concepts of lifelong learning and new teachingideas. On the other hand, they should master modern teaching methods, learn to checkthemselves and strengthen the communication and cooperation between thecolleagues. They should also take an active part in the school-based teaching researchto raise the consciousness of scientific research in the education and teaching.
