The education takes the leading position of a state, and the teacher is the key subject of the education. The university is the cradle of talent training, and the talents are determined by the quality of higher education. In a way, it relates to the prospects and destiny of a state. The performance appraisal for the university faculty is the main measure for promoting the achievement in the teaching and improving the quality of higher education. Although the importance of performance appraisal for the university faculty is rising in China and the system of appraising was created, there are still many shortcomings for lacking of the guidance by scientific theories. Therefore, it is a very important research project for human resource management in the university that how to establish an efficient and practical appraising system.In this paper, the contemporary performance appraisal theories and methods are applied to the teachers in higher education, and the problems and solutions of the performance appraisal in higher education are proposed. This paper is divided into six parts. The background, the purpose and significance and the methods of the research are introduced in the first part. Based on the performance appraisal theories, the connotation, the function, methods and basic theories are analyzed fully in the second part. The current situation of the performance appraisal in higher education, the main problems existing at present and their reasons are analyzed in the key parts—part three and part four. The suggestions and solutions for performance appraisal in the university are put forward in both parts as well. The application strategies and guarantee for performance appraisal in the university are given in the part five. The conclusion and the future research are brought forward in the part six.
