Field studies on ideology education in higher learning institutions are yet rarely touched so far. This thesis intends to probe into the structures and functions of this ignored field. The research is based on the theories of socialist scientific development, Pierre Bourdieu's field study theories, and a case study.The thesis first introduces Pierre Bourdieu's field study theories and educational field theories, then defines some basic concepts concerning ideology educational field studies in higher learning institutions and sets up an analysis model. The educational field under discussion is a network of the objective relations among college teachers, college students and other educational agents functioning at their respective positions; the network is mainly composed of educational targets, capital, agents (both educators and learners), their habits, positions and social relationships, as well as such factors as environment, time, policies, information communications, educational content, practice tactics, etc.. The power evolutions of the contradictions within the network and the laws governing those evolutions help shape for the educational field a corresponding functioning mechanism and structure. While education means shaping human thoughts and behaviors, educational laws refer to the laws governing the shaping itself. To achieve the shaping goals, a proper educational field ecology is necessary.This thesis contends that the ideology educational field of higher learning institutions can be constructed through designing proper field environment and conducting necessary mental shaping and behavior guidance.A case study of School of Media and Information communications, Northwest Education suggest that the educational target of shaping, cultivating and developing man can be better achieved through scientifically manipulating factors such as positions, capital, habits, time, policies and information, etc..
