Zhangjian, No.1 Imperial Scholar of late Qing Dynasty , famous industrialist and educationist, occupied an important position in the history of Nantong's education. Holding high the banners of education and industry , Zhang established schools of new models, opened up the horizon of knowledge for the people and made several unprecedented successful explorations in the educational history of contemporary China while developing industry and bringing benefits to the people.Zhangjian's educational ideology can be categorized as follows: First, define the aim of education as saving the country, developing industry and opening up the horizon of knowledge for the people; Secondly, stipulate the educational policy as bringing up laborers with coordinated development in morality, physical education and intelligence. Thirdly, put forward the educational principle of combining education with practice. Fourthly, advocate managing the schools and education strictly as a means of education.Zhangjian's main educational practice is that it constitutes the modern educational system of Nantong, which includes the regular educational system with normal education as the foundation, the vocational educational system with livelihood education at the core , the social and cultural educational system aimed at providing education for the general public and the charity educational system aimed at helping the disadvantaged groups. An investigation into Zhangjian's 25 years' educational career and his educational ideology is beneficial for us to do a good job in better pushing forward the modern socialist cultural and educational undertakings in the future.
