After-class athletic competitions, as an important part of physical education in school, are important means of cultivating students'interests in, awareness of, and attitudes toward athletics, and helping them get into the good habit of physical training as well as build up right values and outlook on life. In physical education of general secondary schools, it is significant that after-class athletic competitions should be conducted in various forms, either formal or informal, for good health or just for fun. On the one hand, through participating in after-class athletic competitions, from which students have received relative education and acquired sense of success, they will take a more active part in physical training. On the other hand, providing them with good physical education environment, in which students will receive imperceptible influence, their interests in physical training will be motivated.Taking the after-class athletic competitions in 30 general secondary schools in the central region of Jiangsu Province as the object of the study, the thesis will adopt some methods of document review, questionnaire survey, interview survey, and mathematical statistics, so as to investigate the existing problems in the development of after-class athletic competitions in general secondary schools in the central region of Jiangsu Province. The results of the investigation show that these schools in the central region of Jiangsu Province currently do not focus much on the organization and the administration of after-class athletic competitions, and that few schools have issued relative files of the administration of after-class athletic competitions. Most schools do not pay enough attention to the construction of after-class athletic competitions, so that there exists a disconnection between the content of physical education and that of after-class athletic competitions. Because of the lack of fund sources, there is not enough investment in after-class athletic competitions in general schools, so that there are not enough forms of after-class athletic competitions, which have dampened students'enthusiasm in activity participation. As to students'participation in after-class athletic competitions, the frequencies are generally low and the intervals are relatively long. Besides, students receive the knowledge of after-class athletic competitions, without more channels, only through teachers'instruction and network medium. Interests in athletics and athletic circumstance are the main elements that can prompt students to take an active part in after-class athletic competitions, while high pressure of study and low physical qualities are the main negative ones. Since there are few items and many stereotype forms in after-class athletic competitions in the general schools of the central region of Jiangsu Province, it is hard to stimulate students'enthusiasm in the game participation. Some of PE instructors do not have an overall view or a broad access of after-class athletic competitions. All of the above elements bring about the unsatisfying situation of the development of after-class athletic competitions, so it is an urgency to improve the quality of after-class athletic competitions.For the purpose of improving the quality, as the above analysis mentioned, it is believed that the following perspectives should be observed: first, school leaders shall transform their ideas of after-class athletic competitions so as to guide students to have a better recognition of it. The schools should make relative policies of after-class athletic competitions in order to strengthen the organization and administration of after-class athletic competitions. Second, it is a necessity to constantly optimize the circumstance of after-class athletic competitions and to lessen high-school students'social pressure. Hence, enough spare time for athletic competitions can be provided. It is important to arouse their interests and finally make them take an active part in it. Last, it is vital for the schools to innovate after-class athletic competitions according to students'physical and psychological development, through which after-class athletic competitions can be launched in various forms, combined with health keeping, entertainment, and competition, such as holding athletic-culture festival with enriched content.
