Political participation is an important phenomenon in modern political life as well as an important part of democracy. Chinese peasants account for 80% of the total population, Therefore, the situation of their political participation has a vital impact on the process of political democratization. This thesis attempts to explain both the achievement and problems in Chinese peasants'institutionalization of political participation by analyzing the changes of economic and political policies in the rural areas of China since reform and opening up.This thesis is divided into five parts: The first part is the theoretical analysis as introducing different scholars'concepts of political participation and bringing up the definition of the institutionalization of political participation of the Chinese peasant in rural areas in my own view. The second part focuses on the changes in economic and political policies from the reforming to the early 1990s, aiming at analyzing the characters and achievements of peasants'institutionalization participation in this period. The third part is about the new problems emerging in peasants'institutionalization political participation since the 1990s. The beginning of this part introduces the emergence of the new social problems and the associated set of reform measures since the 1990s, and then gives the detail consideration on the peasants'institutionalization political participation. On this basis, this part pursuit to analyst the deep economic, social and political reasons of the complex participation phenomenon. The fourth part offers thoughts and suggestions of the approaches to improve the Chinese peasants'political participation since the 1990s.
