India is the second most populous and the seventh-largest country in the world. By the end of2014, India’s total population is 1.248 billion, and its per capital GDP is $ 1,504. Since the 21 st century, India was recognized as an emerging power, with its economy maintaining 5% growth annually, But the energy gap has been hindered India to become a world power. India must attach importance to their own energy security and implement effective energy strategies to maintain the sustainability of economic development if they want to be more powerful. This paper firstly illustrates India’s current energy situation, which can be concluded as short in supply and low energy efficiency, then briefly introduces on the factors affecting India’s energy security. The second section in this paper demonstrates India’s diversification strategy of domestic energy supply and energy diplomacy. The third section selects nine relevant indicators of energy security and uses PSR(Pressure-state-response) model to evaluate India’s energy security from perspectives of the Target Layer and the Rule Layer, before using the Principal Component Analysis to identify the most important factor affecting India’s energy security. Finally, Evaluating India and some of the major world powers’ energy security by using Factor Analysis in order to assess the overall level of India’s energy security. Based on the evaluation of India’s energy security, we conclude that: ① the implementation of India’s energy strategies in recent years partially offset the external energy pressure, but the overall level of energy security in India is still low; ②According to the nine indicators selected for this paper, India’s energy intensity is the most important factor affecting its energy security; ③India’s energy supply, demand, efficiency, diplomacy and purchasing power are far from satisfaction compared with the world’s largest energy-consuming or energy production countries, which should implements more efficient energy strategies in the future.
