After more than 30 years’ rapid growth, China has made many remarkable economic and social achievements. However, in recent years,some new economic phenomena have appeared in China.Alarge number of surplus rural labor force exist, while the "labor shortage" event happens at the same time from coastal areas to nationwide, leading to the problem of “diminishing demographic dividend” with Chinese characteristics. The construction industry as a labor-intensive industry has been influenced by the problem above relatively early and profoundly,thus it’s quite urgent for the academic community to do more in-depth research on the project of diminishing demographic dividend in construction industry in China.Firstly, the question whether demographic dividend in China is diminishing or not needs to be solved. This essay analyzes three indicators including the population feed rates, the proportion of construction industry employers in the whole society employers and labor costs in construction industry, finally a conclusion can be drawn from the analyses above that the population feed rates is gradually declining while the labor costs in construction industry is improving, and the proportion of construction industry employers in the whole society employers has also improved significantly in recent years. Based on the conclusion, we may make a judgment that the demographic dividend in construction industry in China is diminishing gradually and this trend will continue for a long time in the future.This essay is trying to explore the specific reasons for diminishing demographic dividend in construction industry in China by analyzing three factors: the population policy, the household registration system and the construction industry itself. In addition, this essay also illustrates the influences of the diminishing demographic dividend on the development of construction industry in China from the following aspects: labor cost in construction industry, demands for construction industry, national savings and labor power in construction industry.At the end of this essay, combined with the current situation, causesand influences on construction industry of diminishing demographic dividend in construction industry in China, strategies are put forward in four aspects: reforming the existing population policy, breaking with the urban-rural dual economic structure, promoting the construction industry technology upgrade and increasing human capital investment.
