Desertification draws the wide attention of the international society as a global environmental problem. Desertification takes on the trend of extendibility in China, and serious influences our survival and development. It is necessary to study the cause and prevention policy of Desertification and dynamically monitor Desertification .The study of Desertification with the technology of "3s"(Romote Sensing,Geographic Information System,Global Position System)overcomes the shortcoming of waste of time and energy of traditional methods, and provides technology for realizing dynamic monitoring of Desertification above the middle scale. Building Information System of monitoring Desertification by secondary development based on GIS can effectually manage all kinds of information, make various correlative maps, and provide dependable proofs for policy of prevention and control of desertification,etc. ArcObjects which are based upon COM technique and produced by ESRI corp. , are favourable choice of GIS developer. Basic conception of GIS, the way of secondary development of GIS are briefly introduced in this paper. The series of productions of ArcGIS, architecture of ArcObjects and its secondary development technique are emphatically discussed in this paper. Landuse information system of Guyuan in Hebei was designed and established according to the need of study of Desertification in Guyuan in Hebei province, based on complete functions of display, management, analysis of spatial data of ArcObjects and with visual development tools. In the system, SQL Server is used to manage attribute data, Visual Basic 6.0 is used as development tool,controls provided by ArcObjects component such as MapControl,PageLayoutControl and TOCControl are embedded, Many functions such as display of data, query, statistic and analysis, printout and data management of the landuse information of Guyuan in Hebei are realized. The system is universal, transplantable, secure and extensible, and it has a nice interface. Users can use this system easily and conveniently. The development and application of this system have some guidance on dynamic monitoring and prevention and control policy of desertification of Guyuan country in hebei, and it can also be applied to other area.
